GWERU COUNCIL IN ALLEGED $2 MILLION SCAM

A Jeep Cherokee

Yesterday's The Zimbabwe Mail reported that Gweru City fathers have been accused of misappropriating almost $2 million in buying luxurious cars, flouting tender procedures and swindling revenue of the city’s flea markets for the past two years, the information having been revealed in a full council meeting held recently.
Toyota D4D

Documents seen by a journalist from the paper showed that the city directors, among them town clerk Daniel Matawu, lined their pockets using the city’s revenue.

Allegations are that some time last year the city fathers bought eight cars worth $ 240 000-00 using developmental funds instead of applying for a bank loan.

Matawu was supposed to get a Toyota Fortuner but instead opted for a more expensive Jeep Cherokee worth $130 000.

Finance and engineering directors also got D4Ds worth $73 000 each.

The city fathers also spent $516 000 on top-of-the-range cars for middle-level managers.

The directors are also said to have flouted tender procedures by awarding $500 000 traffic lights-deal to a Chinese mining company Zhang which has no electrical background.

The meeting also noted that the city had lost about $75 200 in rental-trader-fees as vendors at the city’s seven flea markets went for two years without paying.

Gweru mayor Hamutendi Kombayi confirmed misappropriation of funds at the local authority saying the council had tasked Chief Internal Auditor and the management audit committees to look into the allegations.

“There are allegations of serious financial mismanagement in the town house by the city directors. We have already dispatched our audit committee team to further investigate these issues of financial mismanagement,” he said.

Chairperson of the audit committee Moses Marecha refused to shed light on the investigations.

“I am not in a position to comment on the issue as it is before full council. Contact the town clerk or mayor,” he said.

The Town Clerk Daniel Matawu admitted using developmental funds to buy cars.

“The procurement of vehicles was overdue especially on my part. I am actually supposed to be receiving a second vehicle,” Matawu said.

“I acknowledge that we did use the developmental funds instead of getting a bank loan. We were hoping to apply for a bank loan to replace the money,” he said.

On the issue of flea markets, he said an audit team had been engaged to look into the matter.

BEFORE THE TRAGEDY...

Splashing cash.....David Muzenda
Marondera magistrate Shayne Kubonera has remanded traditional healer, David Muzenda (31), who allegedly shot and killed his wife, Ascot-bred Eunice Kombo, in custody to the 6th of June.

The Zimbabwean lower courts have no jurisdiction to grant bail to an accused person facing murder charges, except if the latter' application is given a nod first by the High Court.

GWERU NURSE SHOT DEAD IN LOVE TRIANGLE

Eunice Kombo

The Seke traditional healer David Muzenda, better known as Sekuru Muzenda, whose mistress was found dead in his car yesterday, handed himself over to police at Dema in the presence of his lawyer, Zivanai Macharaga of Mugiya and Macharaga Law Chambers at around 4pm yesterday and claimed that his girlfriend shot herself.

While the general belief was that the deceased, Eunice Kombo, who grew up in Ascot and attended Mambo High School in Gweru, was his mistress, Muzenda, through his lawyer, Zivanai Macharaga, said the deceased, a Gweru School Of Nursing-trained nurse, was actually his wife and she shot herself.
Kombo’s body was discovered in the youthful healer’s Mercedes Benz at the shrine on Monday evening amid revelations that he approached his lawyer after the incident with whom he confided in over what had transpired before dumping his car keys and disappearing.

Sekuru David Muzenda
Muzenda, through his lawyer, claims that his wife took the gun from the dashboard before shooting herself on Monday (around 4pm) following a dispute that morning.
Muzenda says he then called his lawyer and one other person alerting them of the incident within five minutes of the alleged suicide.
He says he then went on the run because he was confused but later met his lawyer to hand himself to the police yesterday.
When journalists from H-Metro arrived at the shrine, police were still manning the place and the late mistress’ body was still in the parked car as the public jostled to get a glimpse of the body that lay in a pool of blood.
“We really don’t know if this woman was killed here or her body was dumped in the car after she was shot. No gun shots were heard although the two were said to have had a heated argument earlier in the day at Zin’anga village, one of the healer’s homes.
“This car (a Mercedes Benz) was parked at the shrine yesterday (Monday) while he used his BMW and the last time he came was at around 3pm and we don’t know what happened from there because we later heard that the woman’s body was found in the car with gun shots.
“He has since fled this place together with his four aides who usually guard this area,” narrated a mole.
Some sources revealed that the woman was now a nurse in Gokwe and the two had met after Muzenda had been treated by the lady after he got sick and their love blossomed thereafter. Muzenda comes from a village in Gokwe.
“This lady was a nurse in Gokwe and we understand that Muzenda was treated of a sexually transmitted infection by this lady and that’s how their relationship developed. This woman had visited Muzenda for the long weekend and I really don’t know what motivated the killing.

“It could be that she had discovered a top guarded secret and Muzenda was afraid that she would share it with the world. She would often come for braai at Ziko every time she was here and it’s unfortunate that she has died this way,” revealed a mole that operates at Ziko shopping area.
Sekuru Muzenda, who started operating at the shrine about five years ago, had become popular as people who wanted to boost their wealth were said to be coming to the shrine in numbers. Ironically some of the messages on his banners at the entrance of the shrine read: “Hapana anofanira kufa nguva yake isati yakwana ‘VaMuzenda vanotaura”.

“You would see well-to-do people visiting this shrine and the type of cars that would be seen parked at this place were a clear indication of the class of people who sought his services.

“Ndatongoudzwawo mangwanani kuti pawanikwa mudzimai akapfurwa mumota yemukomana. Nguva zhinji vanhu vaiuya pano havasi vagari venzvimbo ino,” Murisa village head, Sabhuku Lewis Murisa said.

In an earlier statement, the Zimbabwe Republic Police said they were investigating the circumstances in which the traditional healer, popularly known as Muzenda is alleged to have shot and killed his girlfriend, on 26th May 2014 at Zin’anga Village in Seke.

“It is alleged that the two had a dispute and as a result the accused shot and killed his girlfriend using an unidentified firearm.

“The accused then took the body and put it into the boot of his Mercedes Benz vehicle registration number ACO 9129 and locked all the doors,” said national chief police spokesperson Senior Assistant Commissioner Charity Charamba
She said Muzenda fled from the scene and later phoned his lawyer who then alerted the Police.

“Police are appealing for information which can assist in locating the traditional healer who is currently on the run.

“Anyone with information can contact any nearest Police station or the National Complaints Desk on telephone number 04-703631.”
This was before Muzenda had surrendered himself to the police in Dema later in the day. - Gweru Today/HMetro

THIS IS REALLY, REALLY DISGUSTING!

A baseball fan unknowingly disgusted millions of fans watching back home on TV when he made the woman next to him smell his sweaty armpit.

The majority of viewers watching the clash between Miami Marlins and Washington Nationals on Monday were transfixed on Bernie Castro's game face. But as Castro dreamt of making history with his bat, one disinterested fan, dressed in shades and a cream coloured vest top, decided to grab a handful of sweat odour from his armpit.

What he did next sent millions of viewers reaching for the sick bucket. Cameras picked up the middle-aged fan as he smelled his fingers before wiping them on the poor woman's face who was sitting next to him - possibly his partner. As she wretches and tilts her head back, he's still not satisfied, as even goes back for another wipe, causing her to hurl once more.

If your partner did this to you on national TV what would your reaction be?

Laugh and do it back? Spend the day vomiting and crying? Make them apologise? Call your divorce lawyer?

EXPLOSIVE COUNCIL MEETING ENDS IN DEADLOCK

A drama-filled five-hour long full council meeting ended in a deadlock, with city fathers reportedly refusing to endorse most items brought on the agenda of the day.

Before we were asked to leave after the meeting had just become hotter, council was deliberating on taking over GO Beer Breweries following the former’s belly going up.

It was heard that the company owed around $600 000 to other businesses, and resolutions to downsize staff at the troubled company, reduce working hours, as well as showing board members the exit in a respectable and amicable manner where tabled out.

Councillors also expressed dismay over uncollected refuse due to a broken down but relatively new fleet of service delivery trucks, and malfunctioning streetlights.

Town House was of the view that the local authority should manage its own vehicles, with bureaucratic hurdles from the district administrator’s office cited in the passing of a resolution to employ mechanics or other critical staff.

Gweru Town House
Then the media was asked to excuse the councillors and top city officials as they debated on other crucial issues affecting the City of Progress.

Town Clerk Daniel Matau refused to comment.

"Write what you heard during  those few minutes. Normally I do not handle the press, save for the deputy town clerk (Tapiwa Marerwa)" he said.

"This is just the beginning," a ZANU (PF) councillor remarked happily within our earshot soon after the meeting. The liberation party has three representatives in the 18-member (elected) house.

However a senior council official promised to provide minutes of the meeting.

WHY DONT THEY JUST LEAVE OUR PRESIDENT ALONE?

A video has emerged of President Mugabe and Grace entering a private hospital in Singapore. The footage shows the First Lady protesting at the journalist who was filming the couple. The footage has been shown by UK television station Channel 4.

President Mugabe and his inner circle core enjoy the luxury of foreign hospitals as millions succumb to death in poorly equipped public hospitals in Zimbabwe, critics claim.

In the video, President Robert Mugabe’s wife Grace is seen shouting at the citizen journalist shooting the video, “Why are you taking photos?”

She continues:“You shouldn’t take photos”

The man then replies:
“Why? Its a public place”

A CIO agent and bodyguard then moved in to stop the video-grapher.

President Robert Mugabe flew to Singapore to have his eyes checked at a trusted hospital, according to his spokesman George Charamba. But the UK produced video was titled: “Is Mugabe visiting this hospital for cancer treatment?”-Online

DID "KU-JAYS" WIN HIS WAY TO AN EARLY DEATH?

'Ku-Jays' beside the car he recently won
Joy turned to gloom in Gweru following the death of the city’s – and probably one of the country’s – luckiest men, who died under unclear circumstances on Monday morning, barely 48 hours after winning a car at the Natbrew Castle Tankard draw. Dumisani Mabeka’s winning streak began when he won a ticket to fly to Egypt for an African Nations Cup match between the hosts and Zimbabwe in 2006.

In 2008, Mabeka won a grinding mill from Delta’s Eagle brand before winning $100 and a DSTv decoder with a full bouquet month’s subscription in the Omo ‘Fly and Wash’ competition.
He was also presented with a vuvuzela and a soccer ball.
The latest edition of The Sunday Mail has his picture in Harare receiving his DSTv decoder from OMO representatives.

Dumisani Mabeka had earlier participated and won small prizes that included T-shirts and cartons of cigarettes in a Pacific competition and a solar light in an Econet competition.
On Monday Dumisani “Kujays” Mabeka of Mutapa Section 6 high density suburb in Gweru died mysteriously at around 11 am at his house, leaving behind not only his considerable pickings but also many unanswered questions.

Questions have been raised with friends and relatives suspecting foul play while the general public suspects he had necromantic (magical) powers that could now have backfired on him.
Dumisani’s sister, Tendai said the family remained baffled by her brother’s ‘mysterious’ death and have several unanswered questions.
“We are still failing to come to grips with our brother’s death,” she said.

She related how Mabeka came back from Harare on Sunday after winning a Nissan NP300 truck at the Castle Tankard draw conducted on Saturday.
Mabeka had left home on Thursday going to Bulawayo for the OMO washing powder draw where he won a DSTv decoder and a $100, a vuvuzela and a soccer ball. He then proceeded to Harare on Saturday where he won the Nissan NP300 double cab truck.

When he came back, he had drinks with friends celebrating his new car.
The following day, he told his children that he wanted to rest and went to his bedroom.

“My young sister, Rumbidzai visited him around 11 am to congratulate him and found him unconscious with his heart beating fast. She then called an ambulance but he died before they could render him first aid. He was taken to Gweru Provincial Hospital mortuary,” Tendai said.

Tendai said her brother’s life solely depended on lucky draws and he had built a life on his good fortune.
“My brother was naturally gifted. He last worked for Coca Cola a long time ago and started participating in lucky draw competitions. We didn’t see anything sinister. He won in virtually every competition he entered and was famous for his string of fortunes.

“My brother would look for beer bottle tops anywhere and enter as many entry forms as he could in competitions.
He was not ashamed of doing that. Today, while we accept that it is God’s decision of deciding our time on earth, we’re also relieved that he leaves us without the burden of worrying how we are going to take care of his children. He has a grinding mill that he won in earlier competitions before winning two cars recently,” she said.

Tendai said the family suspected foul play.
“We suspect that someone became jealous of his series of fortunes. We are suspecting foul play because he never complained of any ailment and had never been hospitalised or diagnosed of anything,” she said.

Mabeka’s neighbour who refused to be identified said the now deceased was a controversial character and was once jailed.
The neighbour said it was after Mabeka came out of prison that he started having a string of fortunes.
“Mabeka was an enigmatic character. He was once jailed. He suddenly changed after he was released from prison.

“He started to have a string of fortunes winning big prizes in most competitions he entered. Everyone in the community suspected that he was using juju,” said the neighbour.

The late Dumisani Mabeka (centre) poses with friends during the Castle Tankard Draw in which he won a Nissan NP300 truck before his unceremonious end on Monday

This is a view shared by many others.
“We suspect that Mabeka could have been using necromancy in his shenanigans. That is no mere coincidence that he won in virtually every competition he participated. Most people these days are going to South Africa where they are given supernatural powers that enable them to do miracles and sometimes inexplicable things. Most people have accumulated wealth after having visited witchdoctors who endow them with such powers,” said Mr Leonard Mashamhanda.

Midlands Traditional Medical Practitioners Council Chairman, Mr Fanuel Nyashanu said Mabeka could have fallen victim to necromancy. He said he might have failed to honour commitments that he made when he was given the supernatural powers.
Explained Nyashanu: “Cases of people who visit witchdoctors to help them amass wealth have become rampant in Zimbabwe. We have heard of lot of cases in which people visit these witchdoctors and end up plunging into problems in which they fail to extricate themselves.
“Mabeka might have failed to honour the commitments he made or could have skipped a certain procedure as prescribed by the witchdoctor. This, however, does not rule out the possibility of him having been bewitched by a jealous friend or relative.
“Considering that he had a string of fortunes, there is a high likelihood Mabeka was using supernatural powers to amass wealth and it later backfired on him,” he said.
Gweru Provincial Hospital Medical Superintendent, Dr Fabian Mashingaidze said Mabeka was not immortal, lucky or not.

“Every human being has to die at some point. Having a knack of winning prices does not make any human being immortal. That is not a remedy to avoid death.
“I never got hold of the post-mortem results which becomes difficult to explain but if he was choked it means he might have encountered respiratory complications and failed to seek early medical treatment,” he said.

. . . tragedy of lottery winners
Every week, millions of people buy lottery tickets in the hope that this week, finally, it will be their turn to win big. But is being a lottery millionaire all it’s made out to be? Not according to this sorry bunch… WHO wants to be a millionaire? Most people, surely (except billionaires of course). But sadly, winning a truck-load of money on the lottery, any lottery, comes with a heap of baggage. Daydreams of a millionaire lifestyle seem to have a habit of turning sour faster than a sub-prime mortgage – isolation, paranoia, drugs, crime, poverty and prison await those who fail to adjust, as this top ten of ‘Lottery Losers’ shows:
 1. Jack Whittaker won a record $314.9m Powerball jackpot in 2002. But life since then has been a long list of arrests, lawsuits, broken relationships and even death. In 2007, his then wife, Jewell admitted she wished she had ‘torn up the ticket’.
2. William “Bud” Post won $16.2 million in the Pennsylvania lottery in 1988. He later described the experience as a ‘nightmare’ and wishes it had never happened – who can blame him after he was sued by a former girlfriend eager to get her hands on the cash and his brother hired a hitman in the hope of inheriting the winnings. He invested in ill-fated family businesses and within a year was $1m in debt. Today he gets by on social security payments.
  3. Luke Pittard from Wales won a ‘measly’ £1.3m on the National Lottery. After the novelty had worn off and the obligatory lavish holiday, wedding and new home were done and dusted, he got bored and returned to work at MacDonalds.
  4. An as-yet-unnamed Sicilian won £79m on the Italian lottery in 2008. Before he or she could even collect the winnings consumer groups were demanding that the windfall be seized by the government. The winner has since gone into hiding, fearing the Mafia will come calling.
  5. Janite Lee won $18 million in 1993. Her generosity in giving money to a variety of political, educational and community causes was commendable – but just eight years later she filed for bankruptcy.
  6. Mark Gardiner from London won £11m in 1995. Thirteen miserable years later, he hasn’t lost his money, but he has lost all his friends – even the ones he treated to new £100 000 homes – and lost touch with his family.
7. Michael Carroll won a £9.7m National Lottery jackpot in 2002. Since then he has appeared in court more than 30 times and been jailed for drug related offences. In 2008, he admitted that ‘just’ £500,000 of his windfall remained.
  8. Willie Hurt won $3.1 million in 1989. Two years later the money was gone and he was on a murder charge. Hurt spent his fortune on a divorce and crack cocaine.
  9. Charles Riddle won $1 million in 1975. The original lottery car crash, he quickly got divorced, faced several lawsuits and was eventually indicted for selling cocaine.
10. Ken Proxmire won $1 million in the Michigan lottery. He moved to California, and invested in a car business with his brothers. Five years later, he was bankrupt and back working as a machinist. — Herald/Agencies.

WHY DID SOLANGE HIT JAY-Z?

Solange's Big Hit!
The video of Solange Knowles allegedly attacking Jay Z in an elevator at the Standard Hotel after the Met Gala has been viewed nearly six million times on YouTube, has generated a slew of memes and has remained a top Internet trend all week.

So it should go without saying that the viral clip, obtained by TMZ, was sold for a serious chunk of change—a number which may even raise Beyoncé's eyebrows.

Page 6 reports  that the tape was sold for $250,000 after "being shopped for five days to the highest bidder."

The tabloid also reports that the Standard Hotel has hired Hollywood lawyer Marty Singer to investigate who sold the tape. "There are only a handful of people who'd have access to that tape," said the source. "The Standard owns that tape." But, "Once it was out, Jay Z's people felt they couldn't control it. They were reluctant to try and publicly fight this."

Another source told E! News that TMZ bought the video from a female security guard. The source was told she received between $50,000 to 100,000 for it.
The shocking clip, which was recorded May 5, shows four people, presumably, Beyoncé, Jay Z, Solange and a bodyguard entering the elevator before the aggravated woman, who is presumed to be Solange, begins yelling at the gentleman in white (purportedly Jay Z) before launching into a violent attack.

While it's unclear what initially provoked Solange, Page 6 reports that the singer has recently gone through a great deal of turmoil after starting her own record label, Saint Records. "She used to be on [Jay Z's] label [Roc Nation], but now she isn't. And she moved to New Orleans from Brooklyn with her son.
The popular video on Wendy's Show
Solange still spends a lot of time in New York, but she is further away from her family, which has created some issues."

Additionally, the singer shared a few fighting words with Rachel Roy before brawl.
According to a source, "Solange and Rachel Roy got into an argument prior to the elevator incident," which apparently provoked the singer.
Roy has known the Knowles family for years as she used to be married to Jay Z's ex-partner Dame Dash, and yesterday, after the tape was released, Dash posted a picture on Instagram of Solange with the caption "I am actually impressed with her independent spirit, she seems like a fighter."

As for what sent Solange over the edge?
"Jay said something inappropriate to Beyoncé and Solange, and she snapped," a source told People. "When they got in the elevator, it escalated quickly the way family tensions can. It got exceptionally heated the way family moments can."
"Solange is super protective of Beyoncé," the insider added.
