Gweru promoter Hondora, accomplice slapped with 12-month jail terms for robbery

Gweru music promoter Esau Hondora (33) of Lundi Park and his accomplice, Mkoba 3 resident Proud Mhaka(29) have both been slapped with 12-month jail terms for robbery.

In passing judgement this morning, Magistrate Judith Taruvinga said she had considered community service but noted that the move would tend to trivialize the offence.

“Robbery is a very serious offence, even where not much money is involved, a custodial sentence is called for. In this case $1300 was taken and not recovered…”

Citing a High Court judgement, Taruvinga said because of the prevalence of robbery cases, even first offenders, such as Hondora, can be justifiably sent to prison.

Taruvinga then went on to slap the pair with 12-month jail terms each.

“Three months will be suspended on condition of good behaviour, and a further three months suspended on condition the accused persons pay restitution of $950 each to the complainant on or before 30 June 2016 through the Clerk Of Court.

According to the state case as presented by prosecutor Edward Gwainda, on January 9 this year at around 1PM at Pick n Pay Supermarket in Gweru, Vunganai parked his vehicle.

“After some time, the two accused arrived in a green Mercedes Benz and blocked Vunganai’s vehicle,’ Gwainda said.

The prosecutor further told the court that the two disembarked from the vehicle and Mhaka opened the door of Vunganai’s vehicle. Mhaka grabbed Vunganai by the collar and groin area, Gwainda said, and Hondora joined in demanding his $120 from the complainant.

Gwainda said Vunganai indicated that he had no money but the duo did not listen and Hondora started searching him, resulting in the two taking $1300 and a Samsung Galaxy S6 phone.

Both accused persons were represented by Tonderai Chitere of Chitere Chidawanyika and Partners.

Hondora has organized well-attended live shows at different venues in the Midlands capital.

Featuring mostly the creme dela creme in entertainment circles, these include Alick Macheso, Oliver Mtukudzi, and Jah Prayzah.
Each time Macheso, while performing, would see Hondora in the crowd or backstage, he would shout in the microphone "Esau paGweru!"
