'Kiya-kiya' driver convicted over Malanies death

29 year-old Proud Mhaka, who this morning told Provincial Magistrate Pathekile Msipa that he lived off 'kukiya-kiya' (informal deals), was convicted of culpable homicide and driving without a license.

This follows the death of popular Gweru socialite Donald 'Malanies' Dhlamini, who had half of his body on the other side of the sunroof of a Toyota Altezza Mhaka was driving, when the sedan hit a Vitz on 17 April.

Mhaka escaped with minor injuries. The youngster, who received a heavy send-off from mainly Gweru car and cellphone dealers, disc jockeys, and fellow socialites, died last month at a Bulawayo hospital as a result of the injuries sustained during the accident. Msipa remanded Mhaka out of custody to 1400hrs when prosecutor Bernard Nyoni will address the court over aggravating circumstances.
