For
the second time in about a month, a Mkoba councillor was arrested over
the weekend but was let go before he appeared in court.
Ward
11 councillor Albert Chirau, according to police intelligence sources,
was arrested last Friday for splashing anti-President Mugabe graffiti on
council headquarters walls.
"To
save council, Mugabe must go," the writing on the wall declared last
week, before management hired some youth to rub off the offending
graffiti.
Chirau,
who is also the chairman of the council budget finance committee and
was arrested last month for fraud before being let go, was reportedly
quizzed by detectives from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID)
and later freed.
"Yes
I can confirm that I was arrested and quizzed by detectives. However as
in the first case, I was let go before being charged or taken to
court," said Chirau.
Another
source said organising secretary for the Gweru City Council (GCC)
workers union Simbarashe Leboho, is the one who had implicated the
councillor in the Mugabe graffiti case.
Police spokesperson Inspector Joel Goko was not available for comment before going to print.
